Create your first schedule

Model a request, define required capabilities, and schedule it against a suitable machine — the complete first pass through Orkyo.

Outcome

You create a request with a real requirement. You then schedule it onto a station whose capabilities satisfy that requirement, first by hand on the Utilization board, then again with auto-scheduling.

On the way you touch every part of the planning model once.

Before you begin

  • An Orkyo workspace with at least one site and one space. A fresh workspace from a starter template with sample data works well. An empty workspace needs a space under Spaces first.
  • The Editor or Admin role. A Viewer cannot create criteria or requests.

Step 1 — Define a criterion

Criteria are the vocabulary that connects requests to resources.

  1. Open Settings → Criteria and select Add Criterion.
  2. Enter a Name. For this guide, use Projector.
  3. Set Data Type to Boolean (true/false). This is the simplest kind: a station has a projector, or it does not.
  4. Under Applies to, select the station type you use.
  5. Select Create.

Step 2 — Give a station that capability

  1. Go to Stations. Pick your type from the selector.
  2. Open the station you want to schedule into. Find its Capabilities section.
  3. Add the Projector criterion and set it to true. Then select Save Changes.

Your station can now answer the question that the request is about to ask.

Step 3 — Create the request

  1. Go to Requests and select New Request.
  2. Under Basic Information, give it a name, for example Team briefing.
  3. Under Requirements, add Projector.
  4. Leave Schedule (Optional) empty. You place it on the board instead.
  5. Select Create Request. It now sits in the backlog as Unscheduled.

Step 4 — Schedule it by hand

  1. Go to Utilization and open the Stations tab. Pick a comfortable scale, Week or Day.
  2. In the Requests panel, find Team briefing. If the list is long, filter by Unscheduled Only.
  3. Drag it onto the row of the station from Step 2, at the time it must run. The drop indicator shows the landing slot. Release it to place the request.
  4. The badge of the request changes to Scheduled, and the placement appears on the grid.

Now drag it onto a station without the Projector capability. Orkyo flags Required capability missing. That is capability matching at work.

Step 5 — Once more, automatically

  1. Create a second request the same way as Step 3. Name it Team briefing #2, give it the same requirement, and leave it unscheduled.
  2. On the Utilization board, select Auto-schedule unscheduled requests.
  3. The Auto-schedule preview opens: “Review the proposed placements before committing them.” Check the proposed assignment: request, station, start, and end. Check the Unscheduled section as well, for anything the solver could not place. Each one carries a named reason, such as No compatible resource.
  4. Select Apply to commit the placements, or Cancel to discard them. Nothing changes until you apply.
